This "Intensive" programme is a little different than our usual Social Learning programme that we do throughout the year.<br />
<br />
Our usual Social Learning Programme is twice a week, spread out over 5 weeks (10 sessions total). We have found that having a few days break between sessions allows the child to absorb, digest, and practice the concepts learned in sessions during everyday interactions in their everyday environments, such as home and school. This is based on feedback from parents and teachers about the improvements in the children, in terms of social awareness, self-initiatied social interactions, and social language.<br />
<br />
Our "Intensive" Social Learning Programme is a bit different. Right now it's offered twice a year. 4 days in a row, at 2 hours a day. We have found that this higher intensity (and the careful selection of activities) help the children bond quckly with children they may not have known prior to the intensive. In fact, children who go separate ways afterwards often talk about their new friends for many months afterwards! What great emotional memories! This option is also great for children who may not be able to join our "regular" twice a week Social Learning programme.<br />

By the way, we keep to an average of 6 children per session, to ensure quality interaction between and among the children.<br />

WHO IS THIS MODULE SUITABLE FOR?<br />

Children with autistic traits who have<br />
- Great vocabulary, but awkward social skills<br />
- Social interest yes, but not yet great social ability<br />
- Difficulty perceiving others' body language<br />

Children who have never attended ANDI Initiative's Social Learning modules will need to come in for a half-hour screening (FREE) to determine if this programme is suitable.<br />

<b>These 10-session modules are for children on the autism spectrum, or those with similar challenges. We do sometimes include typically-developing peers (children who do not have autism), so that everyone can learn from each other.</b><br />

<b>Bought an flat-packed office chair. Decided to use it as an opportunity to assess some progress in A - muscle tone, muscle strength, mental resilience (it's easy to give up when you have muscle issues).</b><br />

<b>It's also a good chance to check on his problem-solving skills - "What do I do next?" and planning out his body movement and positions, like leaning into the Allen wrench with his body weight. </b><br />

<b>He still needs a lot of coaching and scaffolding, yet it's encouraging to see how far he's come in these areas.</b><br />

As new parents, we were concerned about our son. Nick's* development. In particular, we noticed that Nick was struggling with his verbal and social skills In order to get a professional opinion, we consulted an ABA therapist in London who recommended we do a VB-MAPP assessment. This was the turning point in our decision to consider an early intervention programme for Nick.<br />
<br />
As there are many different early intervention programmes, we reached out to friends and family who had similar experiences with children on the spectrum.<br />
<br />
We were introduced to ANDI Initiative by our friend Asma, and for that we will forever be thankful to Asma and family. We met with Intan and soon got to learn more about ABA and her suggestions of the play-based programme that could assist Nick.<br />
<br />
We are not from Malaysia and so this was a big decision for us, but within five minutes of meeting with Intan, we were convinced that this was the right therapy and the right person to help our son overcome his challenges.<br />
<br />
We immediately packed our bags and moved to Malaysia!<br />
<br />
Nick works with Intan (his programme designer and therapist supervisor) and three AMAZING play-based ABA therapists. Intan works closely with the therapists to develop a programme that incorporates communication and occupational therapy goals, and to build physical strength, knowledge and understanding, all through a series of 'table time' and 'play time'. We started a fairly intensive therapy programme of 18 hours a week, and it has been a joy to listen to Nick's laughter during these sessions.<br />
<br />
What an amazing four months it has been for us!<br />
<br />
Previously he had little conversational skills, but during this short time, we see a whole new child with improved eye contact while confidently taking command of his language, to be able to answer questions as well as to communicate his wants and needs to a greater extent.<br />
<br />
We love how his personality has flourished over the last few months and Intan and the therapists have really helped him share his sense of humour and lively personality with the rest of the world.<br />
<br />
In addition to communication, we have seen significant improvement in his gross motor skills as well as building his physical body strength. Previously, Nick had little interest in sports while now with the improving physical strength and skills, he enjoys throwing the basketball with his grand-dad.<br />
<br />
Though his sessions are currently one-on-one sessions with the therapists (and this has been crucial to allow Nick to develop his skills), we are excited to start the journey of introducing play dates as well as improving the conversation skills. Nick has really started to come out of his shell and introducing himself to other children.<br />
<br />
Whereas previously he would always choose to play on his own, he is now slowly taking notice of other children and trying to engage them in play. Whether it may be playing Hide & Seek or singing nursery rhymes together, it is a joy to see him more confident around other children.<br />
<br />
There have been many life-changing moments for Nick over the past four months, and the constant support of Intan and the therapists to both Nick and the rest of us in the family is the reason for Nick's success thus far. For this we thank you from the bottom of our heart.<br />

Dylan started play-based ABA in January 2014 when he had just turned 4. Prior to this, we have been using the flashcard method (rote learning way) to teach him which we found Dylan quickly grasping, but needed a lot of effort from us as parents to keep him motivated and focused on his tasks. In addition, he language skill is limited and we found it challenging to prompt him to request for anything around him when he seemed so aloof.<br />

Intan was truly a blessing to Dylan when she introduced play-based ABA. Dylan has since shown tremendous step-by-step improvement in the areas of cooperation, compliance, cognition, language and community skills. Play-based ABA offers a home-based therapy which has the fundamental ABA principles coupled with many funfilled activities and practical strategies which are tailored to Dylan's needs and interests. Typically for Dylan, his therapy covers table time, floor time activities (book reading, play dough, etc.), play time (Thomas train, bubbles, etc.) and physical activities (fitness ball, throwing beanbags into basket) and community trips. Overall, play-based ABA keeps Dylan well-engaged during therapy especially in the areas of eye contact and language content, and most importantly, builds his love for learning and interaction.<br />

As with any 4-year-old, Dylan loved the outdoors and enjoys going to the shopping malls, However, bringing him out was a challenging task for us as he used to dash about to anything and everything that interest him and occasionally wandered off from family members. Sometimes, there were also moments of meltdowns in the crowded places. The introduction of supervised community trips, such as to a shopping mall in Dylan's case, definitely plays a pivotal role in overcoming these problems. The community trips help groom Dylan to behave appropriately and eventually ensure safety in those environments. Moreover, the trips allow Dylan to apply functional skills beyond the comfort of his home. As a bonus, we get the chance to enjoy every minute of time spent with him in the outdoors.<br />
<br />
Team meetings are held at least once a month between parents/carers, therapists, and Intan. The meetings provide in-depth communication about Dylan's progress and challenges. Any new problems, obstacle or resistance are discussed, In addition, the meetings allow feedback and ideas from parents' perspectives to be incorporated into the programs as such the ABA programs are individualised to suit Dylan in order to achieve the best outcomes.<br />
<br />
In short, we are pleasantly grateful to be part of this play-based ABA therapy in helping Dylan in the journey of life-long learning,<br />

This is the glimpse of a month in the life of 2 boys: "Robert" and "Luke" (both pseudonyms), who needed help learning to play and work with others in a meaningful, interdependent way.<br />
<br />
Because Luke was moving away, we had only 4 weeks to work on our goals, mid-July until mid-August, 2014. This ended up being a module of 6 sessions at 1.5 hours each time. In addition to this face-to-face time, therapists who worked with each boy also reinforced some of the goals about once or twice a week on other days, in a 1:1 setting (therapist and child).<br />

Finding Out About Each Other: A little was done at every session. Each boy learns that other person have realities and interests different from his own ("Oh, he has a sister, but I don't. And guess what, he doesn't have a brother, but I do." "He likes cars but I like animals." "His mum has a different name from my mum.") Many children on the autism spectrum have challenges with understanding/accepting Other People's Perspectives. This activity can nudge that awareness along.</div>

At the end of the 6 sessions (across 4 weeks), we could see some progress (defined by the reduced need for scaffolding/prompting by adults) in most* of the areas. However, it is clear that a longer module would have helped even more!</div>
