Books Added to the Collection in June 2013

For Book Loan procedure, click HERE.

How to Borrow Books from ANDI Initiative

Choose one of two books that you want to borrow.

Email or SMS me the titles, I will let you know if they are immediately available or if they are loaned out.

If available, contact me directly to arrange day and time to borrow. More than likely, I will leave the books with a neighbour for you to pick up from, at Section 17, Petaling Jaya, Selangor. Address will only be given out once date and time is confirmed. Alternatively, you and I may decide to meet somewhere as time permits.

There is a fully-refundable deposit of RM30-50 per book. You can bank in ahead of time, or bring with you when you pick up the book(s). This will be refunded when you return the book in good condition.

Books can be borrowed for two weeks. That deadline can be extended if no one else is waiting for the books.

Currently there is no browsing allowed, you will have to decide ahead of time which book(s) you want. For a somewhat complete list of books, click HERE, or check out our photos on the ANDI Initiative Facebook page.

A gentle reminder: This book loan service is for PARENTS of children with special needs, as it is meant to reduce slightly the financial burden in raising a children with special needs. Other parties (therapists, teachers, my past and present grown-up students, etc) may borrow on a case-by-case basis.

Please be patient with this less-than-ideal arrangement. Having NO paid staff helps keep this a free service.

Hotel Soap Project - Again!

Do you have a drawerful of hotel soaps brought home from holidays or business trips? Would you like to give them away to a good cause? Free up some drawer space?

If so, contact us at ANDI.Initiative@gmail.com to drop off your items in Section 17, Petaling Jaya, Selangor.  In the past, we have passed these items on to orphanages, children's homes and centres for children with special needs. We will continue to give away the donated soaps to any establishment that wants them.

This time around, the Pertiwi Soup Kitchen (who serve the homeless in Kuala Lumpur) has indicated that they would like to receive some.

Here are some guidelines:

1. Only bars of soap will be accepted ( no liquid soaps or shampoos).
2. Each item MUST be unopened (completely sealed in its original packaging).

Deadline for donation drop-off is March 15, 2013.

Feel free to spread the word. Thank you!

Angels Come in Many Forms...

...to borrow a saying by some of my friends.

I'm overwhelmed to receive this gift to ANDI Initiative from Brenda Smith Myles, Ph.D and Autism Asperger Publishing Company (with many thanks to Judy Endow, MSW, for the hook-up).

Truly Angels!

After I process them, these 42 titles (yes, forty-two!!) will be listed in this blog, our Facebook page, and available for loan to parents of children with special needs.

Happy Reading!

Unique Voices of those on the Autism Spectrum

If We Listen (and Read), We May Just Learn Something...

Not every person with autism spectrum disorder (ASD) grows up to be an accomplished speaker or author. But then, come on, not even the neurotypical (non-autistic) population have too many eloquent and insightful "representatives" right?

However, we are fortunate when ASD adults like Judy Endow, Temple Grandin, Sean Barron, Donna Williams, Stephen Shore, Wendy Lawson, James Williams (and many more) choose to give up their privacy. The rest of us gain from their INSIGHTS and their UNIQUE PERSPECTIVE.

It changes the way we view, raise, or teach those on the spectrum. It helps us treat those around us with dignity, respect, compassion, and many times, AWE.

Click HERE for several of the books by authors, speakers, advisors, consultants, educators who have an Autism Spectrum Disorder. These are available for loan from ANDI Initiative.

(Also here's a shout-out to Dr Stephen Shore himself, who - as I write this - is in Kota Kinabalu, Sabah, Malaysia speaking at the conference there!)

Parent Voices Support Group is Back!

What's the latest buzz in educational interventions for learners with ASD?

A parent who recently attended a 3-day conference in Wisconsin, USA, will informally share what was covered at the conference, including:

  • the latest research on what the "best practices" are for teaching ASD learners
  • using technology
  • what teenagers and adults with autism want you to know about them.

As usual, the format will be 1 hour on the topic, moderated by the parent speaker, followed by 1 hour of networking and socializing with a light snack.

Date: Sunday, 22 May, 2011
Time: 10am - 12 noon
Venue: SS2, Petaling Jaya (address will be given to confirmed attendees)

Registration necessary. Please send an email to ANDI.Initiative@gmail.com
